Artist statement

For me, the creation of art is always a journey. Over the past five decades I’ve explored different styles, subjects and media, often merging styles or switching among disciplines.

Creative variety is important to me, and characterizes my work. Each gallery on this site presents a series from my varied and parallel recurring interests.

Landscapes

This series emerged from my roots in Saskatchewan (with its large-scale visual drama of land and sky), and evolved as I have embraced my strong affinity for all of Canada’s landscapes.

Calligroptics

These paintings and prints feature graphic images derived from calligraphy and used to create compelling visuals. The non-objective paintings and prints feature dynamic, intriguing compositions, some in larger dimensions.

Made to Measure

This series brings together landscape and trompe l’oeil, with realistic renderings of tape or pins holding mini-landscapes, often on rulers or sticks in the foreground. Among other things, a play on the ambiguity of scale.

Figure in Landscape

These works, which include many pen and ink drawings, embrace the essential timelessness and universal appeal of “people in place”.

Abstracts

These works represent how I have approached abstraction- exploring the endless possibilities of combining shape, colour, composition, dream imagery, and personal imaginings.

Having Fun

Throughout my life, I have looked for and found ways to illustrate the humorous, the satirical, the simply joyous- in cartoons, caricatures, (even a short cel animation). Included are works that take joy in sticking a pin in the balloon of pomposity.
